EC-Construction

OVERVIEW

EC-Construction, small construction company based in San Jose, CA, was rapidly expanding and realized the need to launch a website to reach the next level of business. They engaged me to help them design and publish their site.

This project was time sensitive, and the client had the specific need of featuring their projects in the forefront of their site. My focus was on building a simple one page site where their clients could see their work, learn about EC-Construction, and contact them.

ROLE

Freelance Designer, User Experience

User Flow, User Research, Competitor Analysis, Interaction, Visual Design, Prototyping & Testing, Information Architecture, Content Writer, Hi-fidelity Prototype, Webflow buildout

February 2024 - October 2024

This project came to me through my connections to the facilities world. EC-Construction was looking to grow their business and needed to launch a website to meet the demands of clients. I was given little direction other than being provided with a simple logo and color palette.

The clients main concern was to avoid sacrificing business, so I took on the responsibility of all roles from design through website implementation and published the site in a timely manner.

The Problem

CONTENT CREATION

EC-Construction website, initially being run by the owners, did not demonstrate the level of organization of a mature business. The client shared initial information and photos through text thread. Therefore, I had to not only develop the style for the site, but also come up with most of the content.

My initial discussions and these messages drove my thought process in creating the site content. I would need to...

  • Tell the story of EC-Construction. By emphasizing the fact that they are family owned and active participants of the community would help build brand loyalty.
  • Highlight their work. TA thorough project section with good visual representations of their work as one of the main goals.
  • Include a CTA on every page. This would offer an option to contact EC-Construction at many junctions.

THEIR STORY

Using information provided by the client, I began crafting the “About” section for the site. I led the section with the story of how they contribute to the community. Continuing that narrative, I used a picture of the crew that helped emphasize the fact that they were a small family owned company with humble beginnings.

ABOUT SECTION

Design

The inspiration for EC-Constructiongc.com came, in part, from their sister company EC-Hauling’s existing site. In the interest of continuity, the “Services” sections use of icons to illustrate provided services seemed fitting. To maintain brand recognition, I also mimicked the section titles.

Development

Implementation of EC-Construction’s website needed to happen fast being that they had client bids hinging on having an active site. I built the site using Webflow. The initial design mockup included separate pages highlighting the different types of work they do. In the interest of time we decided to go with a single page with a project slide show being predominantly placed under the hero. This also improved usability by eliminating click through.

Results and Takeaways

This project was an exercise in balancing speed with work quality. I learned that some clients, especially smaller businesses, are going to be more hands off. The need to make decisions for the benefit of the client with minimal input is sometimes necessary.

Some of my takeaways from this project are:

  • Time equals money. The need to complete a project in a timely manor is important when the client is potentially missing out on opportunities as it takes longer.
  • Stories are powerful. Crafting the right story for the client is important. It can help them figure out their identity in the early stages, and will help build brand loyalty.
  • Be flexible. Changing direction at the right time can help maintain a deadline and improve usability.
